UPON THE ALTAR OF THE NATION: A Moral History of the Civil War
by Harry S. Stout
This book by an American Religious History professor at Yale peels back the veneer on the Civil War to look at: slavery, God and Country both North and South, the beginnings of American "civil religion" which in many ways has replaced Christianity, the origin of "total war" in the modern era, a racist Democratic Party, a half-hearted Emancipation, the sell out of churches and ministers to politics (a red flag for any era) and many historical tidbits such as the origin of "In God We Trust" on US currency and coinage. A very worthwhile read.
